The saying goes, “You can’t win the race in the water, but you can certainly lose it.” For many triathletes there are a select few who spent the hours in the pool as a young tadpole or joined the local masters swim program before grabbing a bike and pair of running shoes. For many dry landers I’m sure you have kicked, thrashed, and swallowed a lot of water in order to attempt to swim.
Now that you’re able to gracefully glide from wall to wall lets look at improving that swim stroke. I have compiled a list of 8 Clinics and Masters programs that you should consider dipping your toes in the water with. Many of these programs are offered year round, and a great opportunity during the offseason in order to give yourself a fighting chance in the water for the 2014 season.
Clinics and Private instruction focus on teaching efficiency and technique in the water. Most of these clinics work on both lane and open water techniques. Get ready for a lot of drills, these are not workouts simply instruction for you to take back to your own swim workouts. Adding these sessions on top of a regular schedule of swimming will greatly improve your ability before you know it. The 4 clinics listed will range in prices for registration due to the specificity of the program. From 1-on-1 instruction to group classes there is something for everyone in austin.

Looking for that push in the water? Joining a competitive Masters program will test your fitness and endurance in the water. Masters sessions last between 60-90mins getting anywhere from 2-5k with drill, stroke, and kick sets. You will not just focus on the freestyle stroke but often times have a workout incorporate breast, back, and butterfly strokes. The group workouts will build your fitness and speed in the water. Get ready to share that lane in a circle swim, groups are broken up by ability. Don’t worry if your a triathlete with no formal competitive background you can start off slow and build your way up the lanes.
