Austin is justifiably proud to be called the “Live Music Capital of the World.” Perhaps Austin Mayor Steve Adler should also proclaim our fair city as the “Beer Mile Capital of the World.” After two beer mile world records were set last night at the second World Beer Mile Championships held in the parking lot of the Austin American Statesman, Austin is certainly the epicenter of the Beer Mile universe.
We don't get many world championships around here, but the ATX has at least one it can be proud of: The Flotrack Beer Mile World Championships. For the second year, Austin will be the site, tomorrow night (Tuesday, December 1st). The best beer milers from all over North America will compete for serious prize money and world honors. The Beer Mile Worlds are on tap to begin at approximately 8:30 p.m.
[UPDATED December 3 @ 8:00 AM] Late yesterday Flotrack announced the inaugural beer mile is moving to the Circuit of the Americas track, away from the original location in east Austin. We'll provide more details as they become available. No changes have been made to the schedule. The first Open heat goes off at 5:35 [...]
Running and beer go together like—dare I say—peas and carrots. (Thank you Forrest.) But it's true. Running and beer have been inextricably linked since the days when many of the major beer brands (Coors, Bud, Old Style, Michelob, Natural Light, ad nauseam) saw a vast, untapped market and began pouring sponsorship dollars into road race [...]
The Flo Beer Mile World Championship is three weeks away and Austinites are prepping to defend their home turf against some top competition that includes Olympian Nick Symmonds, former Beer Mile world record holder Corey Gallagher, and many others from across the country. Last Sunday at a local track, Todd Gerlach, Lon Breintenbach, Lance Parker, [...]
Fresh off a third place finish at the 2014 Run for the Water 10-Miler, 44-year-old mother of six Chris Kimbrough broke the women's beer mile record with a stunning 6:28. The previous record of 6:42 was set by Seanna Robinson of Hamilton, Ontario in 1997. An official beer mile involves drinking a 12 ounce can [...]
Although the location remains a secret (for a variety of very good reasons), the event is not. Austin-based Flocast is hosting the Beer Mile World Championships on December 3, 2014 and bringing in top competition headlined by 800-meter Olympian Nick Symmonds. From a press release in August, Flocast co-founder Mark Floreani said, "The participation in [...]
As Forrest Gump might well have said, “Running and beer go together like peas and carrots.” Well sort of. The connection between beer and running does go way back to the days when a running club’s group run invariably ended up at the local tavern for a few post-run brews. Today, there is still that [...]
