It’s Time To Scout the Austin Marathon Hills

There is absolutely no question that the key to having a good race during next Sunday's Austin Marathon or Half Marathon (February 14th) is having a familiarity with the numerous hills that punctuate both courses. These hills must be run smoothly and well-paced. Push too hard on the uphills and you'll run out of gas. Fly down some of the steep downhills and you'll pound your quads and have nothing left for the tougher uphill portions.

The old stand-byes of starting an exercise program, quitting smoking, losing weight, running a marathon, ad nauseam - just doesn't seem to float with too many of us.

Will Nation can relate. Road-racing experience? Local knowledge? Forget about it. Who needs it? Certainly, not Nation. The 22-year-old recent UT grad won the 3M Half Marathon on Sunday and believe it or not, it was the very first road race of his life. Not just recent college life where track coaches tend to frown on extracurricular activities, such as a frivolous road race.
