Texans Running Boston – A Closer Look at the Numbers

Earlier this week we posted an article looking at the number of Boston Marathon registrants in Austin per capita compared to the rest of the “Texas 4” (Dallas, Houston, San Antonio) in addition to a number of other cities across the US known for having a vibrant fitness community. This ruffled the feathers of some living in suburbia and furthered the never-ending debate over whose city is the best that Texans seem to enjoy.

There are 1,142 residents of our great state signed up to run from Hopkinton to Copley Square on April 21st, representing 3.17 percent of the field. In comparison to some of the other major marathons, 2.4 percent of the 2013 Chicago Marathon registration came from Texas, and 2.3 percent in New York last November. According to a recent Runner’s World study, only three other states had more runners finish in the top 1,000 males and 1,000 females at the 2013 Boston Marathon – Massachusetts (221), New York (171) and California (162).

Because Boston assigns bib numbers – except for charity runners – based on qualifying times we were able to sort through and pull out some interesting statistics. Just about any area in the state – not counting the Panhandle because we don’t have many runners from there and the ones that do run kept running to a better city – can find a number to justify their region as the “fastest”. Austin has the most Boston Qualifiers, but the Dallas/Fort Worth Metro area has 45 more registered. Eight of the top 10 male and female runners are from the Houston area while Flower Mound, Arlington, Plano and Fort Worth rank top four for fastest city based on bib number averages.
