Schlotzsky’s Bun Run Returns With New Date, Location and Charity

As we recently reported, the Schlotzsky’s Bun Run was rumored to be moving to a fall date and away from the long-standing downtown location. Today, registration officially opened for the 32nd – albeit very new – edition of the race to be held in the Domain on Sunday, September 28th.

For over three decades the race was a mainstay on the calendar, raising millions of dollars for the Austin Sunshine Camps. Like so many other “old Austin” events – and the RunTex store near the finish line – growth and change forced unfortunate outcomes. Most everyone thought the Bun Run had disappeared once the partnership with the Sunshine Camps ended. Now with a new charity (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) and a location not nearly as subject to the whims of city planning and downtown growth, the ever-popular race is back on the schedule.

“With the relocation of the Schlotzsky’s corporate office from downtown to The Domain, we felt it made sense for the Bun Run to make the move as well. The Domain offers a fun, unique course we think runners will really enjoy,” said Amanda Palm of Schlotzsky’s.

“We had a very long, very successful partnership with the Austin Sunshine Camps and are proud of the support we provided them over the last 31 years. To reflect our status as a national brand, we named JDRF as our corporate cause in 2012. Moving forward, all of our fundraising efforts will be directed to JDRF to help find a cure for those living with type 1 diabetes.”

The course starts at the Domain Central Park, heading north for a loop on Alterra Parkway/Burnet Road, west on Esperanza Crossing with a loop through the main shopping area before doubling back on Esperanza and finishing at the park.

Registration is $30 for the 5K until September 27th and $15 for the Kids K.

There is also a furry friend division added to the mix this year.

“We know Austin is a dog-loving city and the Fastest Dog in Austin race is a way to time your dog on the 5K course. For just $10, you can register your dog for the 5K and they will be timed just like you are. The fastest dog will get a sweet treat and its owner will get a fun trophy!”
