By any measure, this is the best weekend of the year for the Austin running community. The level of excitement is palpable as Marathon Sunday approaches. The Austin Marathon and its much larger half are the most prominent events we have that draw the greatest number of out-of-town runners to our fair—running—city. More than half of the registered runners are from outside of the Austin metro.
The Austin Marathon/Half Marathon is going to be here before you know it. If you're one of the 17,000 who are running, this final week will feel like it drags on forever. But trust me on this one: Marathon Sunday--February 15th--is right around the corner.
There is absolutely no doubt whatsoever that the key to having a good race during next Sunday's Austin Marathon or Half Marathon (February 15th) are the numerous hills that punctuate both courses. Push too hard on the uphills and you'll run out of gas. Fly down some of the steep downhills and you'll pound your quads and have nothing left for the tougher portions.
On-line registration closes tonight (January 21st) at midnight for the crown jewel of the Austin racing season: The 3M Half Marathon.
