One of Austin’s favorite running events, the Zilker Relays

For the 14th time, a little relay race down in Zilker park, has struck again. This is the race that brings many runners ( the field is limited to 1200 ) together with their friends for a short 10 mile race that is 4 equal 2.5 mile legs. I am amazed at the amount of pure running talent that this race brings out in our Austin running community. It’s just short of amazing. Wait, it is amazing. Teams and organizations from all over town show up to test their speed against the best. Rogue Running, Austin Runners Club, Primal Endurance, Run Lab, Team RadioActive and many others as well as corporate teams are involved. The race started with a kids relay that was a 300 meter run and was quite a blast to watch. Then promptly at 6:30 pm, Logan set the race in motion. The first leg of approximately 300 runners were off. The temp was in the mid 90’s and with some of the course in the sun, it was pretty warm. As the runners completed their individual legs, the remainder of the 4 person teams went out for their leg. The top team finisher completed the race at a 4:59 minute mile pace (wow).

I spoke with race director, Paul Perrone about the race briefly. He told me, that although he has recently moved out of state, he still considers Austin his home and was thrilled to be back here putting this on. He said that since it has been going on for some time, the race setup and production goes pretty smooth. I could tell that he has lots of love for this race.

The after party included food from Tacodeli, adult beverages and some music from Sour Bridges.  There were several vendors on hand as well to support this event and promote their products.

Race Results are here.

If you haven’t tried this race, I would highly recommend that you round up 3 of your closest buddies and give this race a try.
