Freedom 5000 On Tap July 4th

July 4th races are as much a tradition in Austin as watermelon and fireworks are. In the past, there have been such major Independence Day races as the Marathon Relay (now in September) and the Firecracker 5000.

But there’s still a quality, low key race this Friday morning at Camp Mabry: The Freedom 5000. A couple of years ago, this 5-K moved from the State Home across 35th Street to Camp Mabry for a flatter, more secure course.

This year’s Freedom 5000 begins at 8 a.m., followed by a Kids K at 9:30. Camp Mabry opens to race participants at 6:30, but you must be bring a driver’s license to get admitted to the base.

There is raceday registration at the race site on the base, but pre-race registration and packet pick up is Thursday (July 3) from 1-6 at Luke’s Locker (115 Sandra Muraida Way).
