Fast Times, Wet Weather and Record Field at 12th Annual Zilker Relays

Bell Wealth ManagementAUSTIN – The 12th annual Zilker Relays featured a new date, a new course, and a record-setting 1,100 runners – and a little bit of rain. Actually, it was a lot of rain.

A storm cell moving from the south hit the park just a few minutes before 7 PM, dumping a half inch of rarely seen substance they call water from the sky. And while the deluge slowed runners at times, it took nothing away from the festive, community atmosphere that race director Paul Perrone has cultivated since 2003.

“This is by far our best and biggest event yet,” a soaked Perrone exclaimed while taking in a plate full of TacoDeli. “We had over 200 students with Explore Austin, 70-plus teams from Rogue and Marathon High, and so many other groups and organizations who came out tonight.”

The new course – cutting off the section of running behind the Botanical Gardens and down Barton Springs Road – made for spectacular spectator viewing.

Texas Running Company’s “We’re Here for the Beer” laid waste to the field with a blazing 49:04, besting the next closest team by more than two minutes. David Fuentes crushed the opening mile in 4:20 before settling in behind Drew Soucy and letting others fight the stiff wind blowing from the west. Lucas Manring and Peter Vanderwesthuizen maintained the lead with the second and third legs, fighting a downpour and dodging runners on the tight course. By the time anchor Rory Tunningley got the NUUN baton there was little doubt who was taking home the victory.

“The competition was so great tonight and I just couldn’t be more pleased,” said Perrone. “It’s so fun to have so many in the community out here and it was great to be back on the Zilker grass – where it all started in the beginning.”

Taking the overall female crown was the Jam’n Rogue Women in 59:09, edging out Team Aussie Women.

While some might consider the Zilker Relays as the bookend of the 2013-2014 racing season, it’s now become the kickoff event sitting just a week before the first race of the Austin Distance Challenge – Run Free Texas 80’s 8K.
