Sunday morning marked the official start of the triathlon season in central Texas with the first installment of the Texas Tri Series – the Rookie Tri. In its 11th year, the event featured a 300 meter swim, 11.2 mile ride and 2 mile run. Although designed for beginner triathletes, there were also divisions for Veterans (anyone who is not a Rookie) and Open (fastest division).
Held at Walter E Long park in east Austin, the event played host to over 1,000 participants – an increase of nearly 20 percent from 2013. The balmy morning meant great race conditions, compared to the frigid waters and cold wind from previous year.
The open was designed for the pros and elites to mix it up regardless of age or gender. The three fastest male and female racers of the day from the 36 person roster posted great times.
On the men’s side, Aussie Michael Lori led the race from the early on, coming out of the water with the lead and never looking back. Teammate Brian Wade of Jack and Adams racing and Colin Sully of Moxie Multisport rounded out the top three.

In the women’s division, local pro Kelly Williamson stepped away from her usual long course discipline to race the sprint format. With the fastest bike and run legs, she finished fourth overall – besting all male and female competitors except for Lori, Wade and Sully. Julie Stupp, who set the fastest swim of the day, took 2nd after laying her bike down on the final turn of the bike course. Andrea Fisher of Texas Iron nabbed third in her return to racing after a two year sabbatical from the birth of her two daughters.
