Area Marathoners Nail Dallas and College Station Races; Hannah Steffan Wins BCS Marathon

Central Texans in search of personal bests flocked to the two big marathons in Texas yesterday: the MetroPCS Dallas Marathon and the BCS Marathon in College Station.

Up in Dallas, warm, humid weather slowed the field, but Kenyans Kimutai Cheruiyot and James Kiwa dominated, finishing 1-2 with Cheriuyot getting a one-minute in 2:17:11. Another Kenyan was third in 2:18:34, but the winning woman—Shitaye Muange of Ethiopia–was fourth overall in 2:46:46.

Finishing fifth overall (and second woman) was Jessica Harper of Austin in 2:50:23. Coming in seventh overall was the third woman Liza Galvan of San Antonio in 2:53:20. Galvan was also the first masters runner (man or woman) of the day.

Jennifer Fisher was second in her age group (45-49) in 3:32:13 and Mary Pape was also second in her age group (50-54) in 3:40:25.

In the accompanying half, Logan Sherman of Dallas won it in 1:08:21 with Sara Hall the top woman in 1:12:26.

Fastest Austinite in the Dallas half was Liang Wu who finished fifth in his age group (25-29) in 1:21:07. Kurt Mohlman of Austin came next in 1:23:44 followed by Austin’s Michael Clariett Jr in 1:29:34.

Austin age group winners and high places in Dallas included Angela Vega in 1:33:38 to win her (20-24) division. Murphy Reed was fourth (50-54) in 1:36:38, Christy Schmitt was fifth (40-44) in 1:42:14 and Bonnie Yessian was sixth (35-39) in 1:37:19.

In College Station, Hannah Steffan of Austin was ninth overall but the first woman to cross the line in 3:01:44. Melissa Hopper was second in 3:04:23 and Steffan’s Team Mizuno teammate—Jena Kincaid—was third in 3:08:50.

The first two guys at the BCS Marathon were Benjamin Metto (2:22:11) and Edward Kiptum (2:31:41) who both list Georgetown as their hometown. Third was former Aggie Alex Moore of Cedar Park who finished in 2:44:07. Craig Ottman was fourth in 2:46:05 and Mike McGinn of Austin was fifth in an 11-minute PR of 2:50:30.

The half was won by Abraham Rutto in 1:07:45 and former UT star Erik Stanley, hopped in at the last minute, but still finished second in 1:08:19. Henry Lelei was third in 1:10:34 and Hillary Montgomery was fourth overall (and first woman) in 1:17:30. Jennifer Harney of Austin was second woman in 1:25:23. Kate Looney was third in 1:29:47.
