Alpacas and Ponies at the Zooma Texas Half Marathon, 10k, and 5k

During the long and scenic shuttle ride up the  driveway to the Hyatt Regency Lost Pines Resort and Spa, I felt a slight foreboding about trying to pace people for the Zooma Half Marathon. If you’ve ever driven that road, you understand. Monstrous hills.  However, that fear melted away as soon as I stepped off the bus and stared right into the faces of a hand full of alpacas and small ponies…literally. I can’t tell you what their function is on the resort, but the alpacas and ponies, along with the flurry of pink race outfits and tutus, certainly lightened the atmosphere.

The half marathon course itself was challenging. Rolling hills  extended from the start through about mile 9.5, some of which were very steep and long. The 10k course offered a couple rolling hills, and the 5k course was relatively flat. Participants also had to contend with warm, wet weather. The temperature hovered around a humid 70 degrees.

The hills, heat, and humidity didn’t affect the leaders today. Desiree Ficker easily took first with a 1:30::21, followed by Jennifer Fisher in 1:31::38 and April Koehler.  Well, that’s not entirely accurate, one male participant crossed the line first in the half, and I sincerely hope someone told the poor soul that his “win” doesn’t count.

For the 10k, Lindsey Obrig took first with a 48:04, followed by Cory Coe in 49:21 and Michelle Mcgill in 49:22. Finally, in the 5k, Kimberly Palmer-Contreras won in 20:56, with Briana Mutschink in second with 22:08, and Tammy Shadden in third with 24:47.

Overall, Zooma proved itself an event ideal for all types of  runners and walkers, and the course organization and volunteers were excellent. Not elitist or exclusive, Zooma Texas provides allows all participants to run how they want while wearing what they want. Tutus or tights, lace or latex, Zooma accepts it all.

Congratulations to all the athletes.
