Texas Relays Gets Underway Today; Distance Events Tomorrow Night

The 87th annual Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays gets underway today and continues through Saturday at Mike Myers Stadium on the UT campus. One of the greatest (and oldest) meets in the country, the Texas Relays will draw more than 6500 athletes from all over the country, representing 640 high school, 232 collegiate teams and 150 invitational athletes.

The Relays begins this morning at 10:30 with the first day of the multi-day events which will include a meeting in the decathlon between UT’s Johannes Hock, the defending NCAA champion, and Curtis Beach of Duke who won last year’s Texas Relays decathlon.

In addition to the conclusion of the multi-day events, Thursday will also have several distance races, including the 1500 meters, 5000 and steeple in high school and university divisions.

The first two days of the Texas Relays is free, but the final two days require a ticket which can be bought at the Myers Stadium box office. The Longhorn Network will televise 17 hours of the Relays.

Some of the top Longhorns expected to compete include two-time NCAA shot put champ Ryan Crouser and two-time 400-meter titleist Ashley Spencer in the 400 meters. Former Longhorns scheduled to compete include Olympic silver medalists Leo (The Lion) Manzano and Trey Hardee. Some of the other pros who are expected for the Relays include Jeremy Wariner, a three-time Olympic medalist, Wallace Spearmon, Mike Rodgers and Chelsea Hayes.
