Austin, TX – (Sept. 4, 2018) For the 42nd annual race on April 7, 2019, the Statesman Capitol 10,000, presented by Baylor Scott & White Health, has named the Health Alliance for Austin Musicians (HAAM) as the beneficiary. HAAM will receive $1 from every Cap10K registration, which will open on Sept. 14 at When registering, race participants have the option to donate to the beneficiary, and the Statesman will match donations up to $10,000.

HAAM was established in 2005, and its mission is to provide access to affordable healthcare for Austin’s low-income, under-insured working musicians, with a focus on prevention and wellness.

“Because music plays an essential part in Austin’s cultural landscape, the annual Cap10K would not be the same without local musicians to kick off the race, keep runners going along the course and help them cool down at the festival. We’re grateful to live and work among these talented artists, and are honored to help support them by supporting HAAM,” said Jeff Simecek, Statesman Capitol 10,000 Race Director.

According to HAAM’s statistics, the “Live Music Capital of the World” is home to more than 8,000 working musicians. Annually, live music generates $2 billion in economic activity, with $38 million in local tax revenue. The average member makes between $12,060 and $18,090 per year. Sixty-three percent of HAAM members report making just barely enough to get by.

“We’re thrilled to be the beneficiary of the 42nd annual Statesman Capitol 10,000,” said HAAM Executive Director Reenie Collins. “I can’t think of two more uniquely Austin icons than the Cap10K and HAAM. HAAM is the backbone of Austin music, and we need financial support from donors and the community to continue our important work. This partnership with the Statesman Cap 10K will enable HAAM to help keep the music alive and well in Austin, Texas!”

From walking HAAM members through the open-enrollment process and individualized healthcare consultations to hosting prevention clinics with local health providers, HAAM’s specialized and personalized programs for musicians in Austin and Travis County are intended to keep the music community in the Austin thriving.
