Grand Opening of Trail Boardwalk June 7th: Whole Foods Donates 5% of Sales Today

The highly anticipated grand opening of the Boardwalk on the Butler Trail on Lady Bird Lake will be Saturday June 7th at 10 a.m. Everyone is invited to the ribbon cutting ceremony at the Lake Shore Trailhead on the eastern end of the Boardwalk along Lake Shore Boulevard.

The grand opening is being called “Run, Walk or Bike on Water” and there will be music from SoundWaves, a group march along the 1.1 mile-long Boardwalk (led by Eastside Panther Drumline) and an aerial dance performance by Blue Lapis Light, underwritten by Silicon Labs. This performance will begin at approximately 11:45 under the 1-35 bridge. Six dancers, according to The Trail Foundation, will perform movements over Lady Bird Lake while suspended from columns under the bridge.

Construction on the Boardwalk began in October, 2012. It will be used by hikers, runners and cyclists, as well as those who are wheelchair-bound, in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

The Trail Foundation is encouraging that those attending the grand opening carpool to the event. Better yet, cycle or run to Lake Shore Boulevard.

Also, Whole Foods will donate five percent of today’s (May 21st) net sales from any of its Austin stores to The Trail Foundation.
