Eric Chirchir – 2013 Capitol 10,000 winner and city of Austin 10,000 meter record holder – was arrested last weekend after allegedly inappropriately touching a 15 year old girl at his place of employment.
Eric Kipkemei Chirchir, 31, of Hasbrouck Heights, is charged with criminal sexual contact, obstruction of justice, resisting arrest and eluding police. He’s being held in Bergen County Jail in lieu of $100,000 bail.
According to Detective Sgt. Jon Misskerg of the Bogota Police Department, on the evening of Nov. 15 the victim had entered the women’s locker room of the Bogota Golf Center. While there, Chirchir, an employee of the golf center, entered the room and touched her in an inappropriate sexual manner, Misskerg said. The girl managed to escape and call police, Misskerg said.
When police arrived at the golf center, Chirchir bolted past them. He ran approximately five miles to his house on Terrace Avenue, leaving his bicycle and bag behind.
“He’s fast,” Misskerg said. “This is one of the world’s elite marathon runners.”
Among Chirchir’s accomplishments in the Austin racing scene are victories at the IBM 10K Classic in 2004 and 2012. He holds the city record of 29 minutes, 4 seconds set at the ’04 Classic. In ’09 he ran 1:01:53 at 3M and most recently recorded a 10th place finish in the ’14 Cap 10K.
United States Immigration officials have placed a detainer on the 31-year-old originally from Kenya and will likely face deportation if convicted. As of yesterday Chirchir was still in jail on a $100,000 bond.
