Registration for the 2014 Boston Marathon opened this morning. Well sorta.
While regular registration for Boston doesn’t open up September, registration opened for the 5,633 runners in the 2013 marathon who reached at least the halfway point but didn’t finish because of the bombings near the finish line on Boylston Street. Those runners have until August 29th to register and secure a guaranteed spot in the ’14 race.
The opening for regular registration will be in September, but the BAA hasn’t announced the exact date yet. As in past years, registration for qualified runners will remain open until those slots are filled. But the exact number of races slots for qualifiers has not been announced either because the BAA hasn’t publicly said whether the ’14 field will be expanded and whether exceptions will be made for runners without qualifiers.
Earlier this month, Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis said that the 2014 marathon will have 9,000 more runners than its usual field of 27,000.
