Vern’s is ordinarily, well, no frills. No shirt, no chip timing. Just a well-organized, small, community race organized by my running coach and named in honor of a friend of the race. Run the third Saturday of every month, Vern’s costs a dollar to enter (free for students and Georgetown Running Club members) and since [...]
Spoiler alert: I did not start first, nor did I finish first. I managed to place third in my age group though–yes, out of more than three people! And I won a raffle prize. But first things first. I went into the race with pretty low expecations. I’m running two races in Cleveland, Ohio [...]
April 15 marked the eighth anniversary of Vern's No Frills 5K, a timed race held the third Saturday of every month at Berry Springs Park in Georgetown. It costs $1, and you can buy a t-shirt or tech shirt if you want. The race director is Bill Schroeder, my coach at Rogue, and this was [...]
Last year, one of my BRFs and I went to Shiner as spectators. She had registered early because it sells out fast, but by the time race day came around she was injured so we decided to go and cheer instead. This year, we were both healthy and decided to run the 5K while two [...]
The 6th Annual Brain Power 5K, 10K, Survivor Stride & Kids Run is Central Texas' Race Against Brain Cancer and is slated for Sunday, September 11 at the H-E-B Center at Cedar Park. The race is grateful for Platinum Sponsorship support from Koko FitClub in Cedar Park as well as many other local and Central Texas supporters [...]
It's common these days for races to offer more than one distance option. In that respect, the Silicon Labs Sunshine Run is typical with a 5-K and 10-K on the same course at the same time. Usually, everything works out just fine, but on Sunday morning confusion reigned.
Spring has always meant 5-K racing season in Austin and even though the number of races has diminished, there are still several races left such as the Purple Stride 5-K at Arbor Trails in south Austin (May 7th), the Daisy 5-K at Camp Mabry on May 28th and the Stars and Stripes 6-K, also at Camp Mabry (May 30). This Sunday (May 8) is the biggest and best of the bunch: The third annual Silicon Labs Sunshine Run.
In a city full of run-of-the-mill 5K's, the Austin Gorilla Run has always stood apart for it's uniqueness. Nowhere else can you sign up to support the Mountain Gorilla Conservation Fund and get a suit (choice of gorilla or banana) that is yours to keep. The 6th annual 5K is happening on Saturday at Camp [...]
Those who have been around the Austin running scene for a few years remember the Summer Stampede events. The last one - which we wrote about here - was August 2013. And while it hasn't yet brought out Stampede icons Leslie Barclay and Frank Livaudais - Luke's Locker and Cadence Sports are on their way to returning a low-key, low-entry fee event to the market.
Spring has always meant 5-K racing season in Austin and even though that season is drawing to a close, there are still several races left such as the Ants in Your Pants in Pflugerville and the Daisy 5-K at Camp Mabry next weekend. But this Sunday is more jam packed than usual with options in just about every city from San Antonio to Dallas and Fredericksburg to Bryan/College Station. In total we have 29 event listings on our Race Calendar for May 2nd and 3rd.
Believe it or not, it isn't quite summer yet. Sure feels like it though and the Maudie’s Moonlight Margarita Run 5K on Thursday night is our favorite way to kick off the hot summer. The racing scene in the ATX can be pretty dormant in the summer, but for the 10th straight year we can [...]
If, after 31 years this was the final Chuy's Hot to Trot 5-K (and in all probability it was), this iconic race went out with a whimper, rather than the big bang it so richly deserved. On a perfect morning for racing in South Austin, maybe the best racing conditions in the past 10 years [...]
All good things must come to an end and this Saturday (May 3) will mark the end of one of the iconic races in Austin. On Saturday morning, Chuy's will host its final Hot to Trot 5-K. Sadly, it's true that after 31 straight years and several venues, this great race will be no more [...]
Since 1982, the Schlotzsky's Bun Run has been one of the best (and fastest) 5-K's in Austin. But the Bun Run is no more. Well sort of no more. The race has been resurrected by the Young Men's Business League of Austin, given a new name--the Sunshine Run--and with a new title sponsor (Silicon Labs), [...]
A 5K run this weekend in Northwest Austin will benefit the children of Lynne and James Clopton who were struck and killed by an alleged drunk driver on February 4th. Left behind are a 16-year-old freshman at Anderson High and 21-year-old. The run - very loosely organized with no registration, chip timing or t-shirts, will [...]
